1870-09-29: Newspaper column, 29 Sep 1870, "The Courts" / "Police Court To-day, Judge Snell": ... A SAD CASE. William Duvall, charged with committing an assault and battery on Sarah Duvall, his wife. The testimony showed the assault to be an aggrivated one. The prosecuting witness was present to give testimony, and while waiting in the witness-room was seized with a violent fit, and it was thought at one time that she would not recover. This was succeeded with others, and the woman had seven spasms before she was admitted to the court-room. On entering she was very weak, and said she did not want to prosecute the case---that he was not guilty. She persisted in this assertion, and the Court dismissed the case.

{Our William and Sarah Duvall were the only William and Sarah Duvall couple in D.C. in and around 1870. There was another in 1860, but that Sarah died in 1862. The Police Court was established just that year (1870), to alleviate the burden on the D.C. Supreme Court by handling minor criminal offenses (See "The Evolution of the Courts of the D.C. Circuit," by Carl Stern, April 2013). Judge William Bradford Snell, a state senator from Maine, was the first appointed Judge of the Police Court, and held the position for 18 years. The Court was at 466 C street NW.}

1874-06-21: Parish marriage record: "Georgium Grindle ex loco Cumbria filium Gulielmi {William} Grindle et Helenam Sheeran ex loco Cumbria filiam Brigellae Reynolds. Witnesses were Patrick T. Kean and Helena King. The marriage was performed 21 June 1874 by Rev. Edward Brennan, with a dispensation for a mixed marriage {since George was not Catholic}.

{The Westminster Presbyterian Church was on 7th St. SW, between D and E SW. The pastor was Rev. B. F. Bittinger, who lived at 638 F St. SW. A Presbyterian (also Methodist, Baptist, etc.) manse was the clergy house inhabited by the minister, so "the Manse" was at 638 F St. SW.}

{In the process of researching the story of Sarah A. Grindall we learned a good deal of the story of John F. Purcell. (This was not the case for William E. Duvall and William Roller.) We do not intend to write John's story, but have put together a separate records history for him, up to the time he married Sarah Grindall, including a list of his five previous wives. Records history of John F. Purcell up to 1879}

{Per his 1892 death certificate, John should have been a resident of D.C. since 1852.}

1861-04-23: Civil War enlistment: John Purcell enlisted for 3 mos. as a Private in Capt. McBlair's Co., 1st Battalion, D.C. Militia (Andrew Johnson Guards), and mustered in at Wash., D.C. on 23 Apr 1861. He mustered out on 23 Jul, 3 mos. later, at Wash., his age given as 32. He obtained a Civil War Invalid Pension in 1890, and Sarah claimed a CW Widow's Pension in 1892. (More on this below.) [Fold3, see also John F. Purcell's Civil War Pension File]

1890-07-02: John Purcell filed for a Civil War invalid pension on 2 July 1890, under the Act (of Congress) of June 27, 1890. He was granted a pension of $8 per month from then to 3 Dec 1891, when it was increased to $12 per month (the maximum allowed).

1892-01-05a: Death record: John F. Purcell, d. 5 Jan 1892, bur. Congressional Cem., DC, plot: Range 14 site 256.
"Purcell---Fell asleep in Jesus Tuesday, January 5, 1892 at 9 p.m., John F. Purcell. Funeral from the residence of his daughter, No. 1213 street southwest Thursday next at 2 p.m" [From a death notice in an unnamed newspaper]

1892-01-07: Newspaper article: A column entitled "The Death Record" in the (Washington, DC) Evening Star, 7 Jan 1892, p. 3: "Twenty-five deaths were reported to the health office during the twenty-four hours ending at noon today and in two cases the grip was given as the cause of death. In these cases death did not result indirectly from an attack two years ago, as in the case in many deaths from the disease. In one instance, that of John F. Purcell, seventy years old, the duration of last sickness was ten days, while in the case of Elizabeth Trunnell three days was the length of time given in the certificate. Eight deaths resulted from peumonia and one from bronchitis. Burial permits were issued for the following: ... John F. Purcell, 70 years, la grippe; ..."

1892-01-08: Widow's Declaration for Pension: 8 Jan 1892, Sarah Purcell, age 70, of 1213 Union st. SW, appeared before George Burgess, a U.S. Commissioner of the D.C., to make the declaration (claim). Her husband, John Purcell, enlisted on 23 Apr 1861 in Capt. J. H. McBlair's Co., 1st Battalion, D.C. Inf., in the War of Rebellion. John, whom she had married under the name Sarah Duvall, died 5 Jan. 1892.
Sarah was married to John Purcell on 26 Jun 1879 by Rev. Jesse C. Starr at 456 L St S.W. (the address of the Gorsuch Methodist Episcopal Church). She had been married twice before and both those husbands had died. John was married six times and all died (actually, just the first five had died, of course).
Catharine L. West and Jane M. Sullivan (their neighbor, at 1211 Union St. SW) witnessed Sarah Purcell signing the declaration with her mark.

1892-03-18: General Affidavit, 18 Mar 1892, by Catharine Louisa West, 33, 1213 Union st. SW, and Ella Burley, 37, 476 M st. SW; filed in support of Sarah Purcell's Civil War widow's pension application:
"We are personally and intimately acquainted with the above named claimant Sarah Purcell widow of John Purcell. We were also acquainted with John Pursell, and been acquainted with them for 20 years or more. We know from our personal knowledge and observation that the claimant is entirely dependent on her daily labor or the charity of others for her support. John Purcell was previously married to Julia Brown who died in Washington about 15 years ago and was buried at Congressional Cemetery Washington D.C. Mrs Purcell was previously married twice. Wm Duvall, was her first husband died about 23 years ago and was buried at Potters field Washington DC, her second husband Wm Roller died about 13 years ago and was buried at Potters Field Washington D.C. We know the above facts from our long and intimate acquaintance with all the above named parties."

1898-xx-xx: A draft of a letter sent to Mrs. Sarha Purcell from Mrs. George W. Grindell, in 1898: "Mrs. Sarha A. Purcell / Dear Friend / My son called on you a few months ago, to let you know of the death of his father (your son) George W. Grindell. / As I knew it was my duty as his wife to let his relatives know of his death. / It seemed as though you were inclined to disown him your own son. It was unnecessary for you to deny him for he was respectible and honored by all who knew him, and left a respectible eight (8) children. It has only made matters complicated by you not speaking the truth for I went to Balto and had an interview with Mrs. Laura Hayes his cousin. From the interview I learned that you spoke falsely to hide your own misdoings, and to blemish your son's good name. / Your daughter asked my son if his father married under the name of Grindell. To this I will say (yes!) he did and he was reared up to believe that Grindell was his name and if it is not his name you are the one who ~~can correct the mistake~~ is to blame. / If you wish to make any communications by mail they will reach me at / Mrs. George W.
