{Thomas Higgins was not yet in Killaster in 1858, and probably did not arrive until he married Mary Coll, whose mother was Sarah (Elwood) Coll. Thomas and Mary may have moved into Maurice Elwood's cottage, which was vacant in 1858. Thomas was a laborer in 1864, a cottar in 1866, and a landholder from 1869 on. {A note on Civil and Parish records: The General Register Office in Ireland started recording births, deaths and Catholic marriages in 1864 (it had started recording non-Catholic marriages in 1845).  Thomas Higgins and Mary Coll appear to have married in or before 1862, so their marriage and the births (and perhaps deaths) of their first children were not recorded in these records, which are called Civil Records (as opposed to Church Records).  Roman Catholic Church records of baptisms, marriage and burials were recorded by the local clergy. Not all have survived, or been made publicly available. Killaster was in the R.C. Diocese of Elphin and Parish of Frenchpark (Belanagare and Kilcorkey), and those parish records, covering the period 7 Jan 1865 to 27 Feb 1881, are available online, free of charge, from the National Library of Ireland.  Unfortunately, this period too does not cover the marriage of Thomas Higgins and Mary Coll, nor the baptisms of at least two of their children. The civil records cover the birth of Thomas Jr., b. 1864, but not that of Patrick b. 1863.  Since the (we're pretty sure) last-born child, Maryanne, was born in 1873, these records cover just ten years of Thomas and Mary's marriage. So it might be that there were other children born before 1864 of whom we are unaware.}

1923-xx-xx:  Biograpical sketch of Patrick J. Higgins:  Summary:  Patrick J., Chief of Police in Glen Ridge, Essex Co., NJ, from 1910 to 1926, had been Chief for 13 years when this was written (1923).  According to this biography, Patrick J. was born in Co. Roscommon, Ireland, 10 July 1863, son of Thomas Higgins.  Thomas Higgins was a son of Bernard and Bridget (Mahan) Higgins, who lived and died in Ireland. Thomas came to the U.S. prior to the Civil War, enlisted in the Union Army, served until the war closed, then returned to Ireland, where he then married Mary Coll, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Elwood) Coll.  Thomas & Mary Higgins were the parents of 7 daughters and 2 sons. Thomas died in 1894, at age 60; Mary died in 1910, at age 75.

1923-xx-xxa:  "Encyclopedia of Biography" bio of Patrick J. Higgins.  See 1923-xx-xx, above, for summary of part on parents.  In addition, the sketch mentions that Patrick was born 10 July 1863, spent his first 18 years on his father's farm in Roscommon, was then employed on an English farm in Staffordshire, sailed from Queenstown for the U.S. on the ship "City of Brussels" in April 1881, landed in New York City, later moved to Orange, NJ, but within a few months settled at Glen Ridge, NJ, where he worked for 20 years as a farm gardener.  He was then {apparently 1903} appointed patrolman, and seven years later appointed Chief of Police, an office he has held now {1923} for 13 years.  On 22 Apr 1883 he married Bridget Feeney, daughter of Peter and Mary (McGowan) Feeney.  Bridget was born in Sligo, Ireland, came to the U.S. in 1880, and died 23 Mar 1918, leaving 4 children (see bio for more).  A high mass of requiem was held yesterday in the Sacred Heart Church of Bloomfield at 10 A. M. for Patrick J. Higgins, 76, who was the chief of the Glen Ridge Police Department for seventeen years before he retired in 1927.  Mr. Higgins died at his home at 519 Belleville Avenue Friday after a long illness.  Monseigneur Donnevan of the Sacred Heart Church officiated at the service.  Interment was in Mount Obivet [sic, Olivet] Cemetery, Bloomfield.
 Born in Ireland in 1861, Mr. Higgins came to the United States in 1880 and settled in Glen Ridge when it was a part of Bloomfield.  The separation took place in 1895.  He was one of the few residents of Glen Ridge who had a part in the formation and growth of the borough from its inception to the present time.
 When Glen Ridge set up its own government, Mr. Higgins was one of the first marshalls appointed there, doing the work now performed by patrolmen.  After the police department, as it now exists, was formed he joined it in 1903 and in 1910 was named chief.  He served in that capacity for seventeen years, being succeeded by his son, Chief William P. Higgins, in that office.
 Mr. Higgins was a charter member of the Glen Ridge Volunteer Fire Department and of the Exempt Firemen's Association and a member of the New Jersey State Police Chiefs' Association.  He was one of the pioneer communicants of Sacred Heart Church, Bloomfield.
 In 1883 Mr. Higgins married to Miss Elizabeth Feeney, who died several years ago.  Besides Chief Higgins he leaves three other sons, Thomas of Schnectady, N. Y.; Frank of Philadelphia, Pa., and John of Bloomfield; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Devaney of Glen Ridge and Mrs. Ellen Devaney of Orange, and 18 grandchildren.

The following research was provided by Sally Meyer, Glen Ridge, NJ Town Historian:

Glen Ridge was founded in 1895 and quickly began to arrange for police and fire protection. Thomas was hired as a poiliceman on May 25, 1895 at a salary of $50 a month. Earlier, on May 14, 1895, he signed on as a volunteer with the Glen Ridge Hose Company. He served in both roles until his death in August 1895.

Note: Thomas' brother, Patrick, purchased a grave for him in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in September 1895. Thomas is buried there. It seems unlikely that he could have died in August and not have been buried until the grave was purchased in September of 1895. Records from Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Bloomfield, Essex, NJ confirm the date of purchase and the name of the purchaser.

{We have found no definite records for this Mary Higgins, other than those of her birth and baptism in 1866.  One possibility, however, is a 1900 U.S. Census record for a Mary Higgins, age 25, at 55 Remsen St. in Brooklyn, NY (see 1900-06-01c, below).  This would be the sister Mary Higgins, 55 Remsen St., Brooklyn, to whom Katie Higgins was joining in May 1900, having just arrived in America (see 1900-05-03h, below), and it had to have been either Mary b. 1866 or Mary Anne b. 1873.  Mary b. 1866 would have been 33 in 1900; however, her age as given to the census enumerator may have been a bad guess by the informant, possibly her employer Mrs. McCoy.  A complicating factor is that John Devaney married Mary Ann Higgins of 65 Remsen St., Brooklyn, (age 26), in 1903 (see 1903-09-01g, below).  It could be that the street addresses had been changed between 1900 and 1903, and it could be that Mary Ann was living with her older sister Mary in 1903.  Also, John Devaney, 19, Katie Higgins, 22, and Mary Higgins, 21, came to America together, in 1900.  We have not yet been able to determine which Mary was which.  There may even have been a third sister Mary, b. c1879.}

The only definite record we have so far, beyond her baptism record, is a ship passenger list record from 3 May 1900: Mary Higgins, 21, who was travelling with Katie Higgins, 22, and John Devaney, 19, was joining her sister Maggie in Orange, NJ.

1883-03-14d?:  A Marg. Higgins was a sponsor at the baptism of Patrick and Bridget (Feeney) Higgins' son Thomas on 8 Dec 1883 at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Bloomfield, NJ.  [See 1883-12-08a, above].  So this Marg. Higgins immigrated prior to that date.  Our Margaret Higgins would have been age 22.

"Former Park Commissioner of Orange Heard a Noise and Telephoned for Police.
Frederic W. Kelsey, of 177 Centre street, Orange, sent word to the police of that city last night that he heard a peculiar noise in a room of his house.  In a few minutes Policemen Eugene Finneran, John White, Luke Devaney, Claiborne Patterson, Thomas Barry and John Rankin were searching the premises of the former Park Commissioner, and when the men assembled together, saluted, and reported to the citizen that there was nothing within their observance which justified the least suspicion that any person not connected with the family was perambulating about the precincts of the house, he thanked the men of the law briefly, and dismissed them to their beats."

{This is the "sister Mary, 55 Remsen St, Brooklyn" that Katie Higgins b. ~1878 was joining when she arrived in America in 1900 (see 1900-05-03h, below).  We found Mary Higgins by searching for "surname = "higgins", keyword = "55 remsen brooklyn" in the Ancestry.com 1900 U.S. Census.  The birth year given in the census record, 1875, most closely matches that of Mary Anne Higgins b. 1873.  The census enumerator's informant may have been Emily McCoy, who may not have known her servant's exact birth date at the time of enumeration.}

 "Mr. Devaney died suddenly on Friday at his home.  He was the father of Howard J. Devaney, regional director at Newark of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and former president of the New Jersey State Patrolmen's Benefit Association.
 "Born in County Roscommon, Ireland, 76 years ago, he came to the United States and Glen Ridge in 1897.  Retired in 1949 after 32 years as head custodian at Mt. ? Mary Higgins b. 1879

{Patrick Higgins bio (see 1923-xx-xx, above) mentions that Thomas Higgins and Mary Coll were the parents of seven daughters and two sons, and we know of only six from records found so far. One possibility is that the Mary Higgins, age 21, who came to America in 1900 (see 1900-05-03h, above) with John Devaney, 19, and Katie Higgins, 22, and who was visiting sister Maggie in Orange, NJ, was not Mary b. 1866, nor Mary Anne b. 1873, but instead a third daughter Mary, since Mary b. 1866 would have been 33, and Mary Anne b. 1873 would have been 26. However, Katie would have been 25, not 22, so perhaps the ages given on the ship manifest are not accurate. The sister Mary, at 55 Remsen St., Brooklyn, NY, to whom Katie was joining, would have been either Mary b. 1866, or Mary Anne b. 1873.}
