{Note on Irish Censuses: These were taken at 10-year intervals from 1821 to 1911. The original returns for 1861 and 1871 were each destroyed shortly after statistical information had been extracted, to protect confidentiality. Those for 1881 and 1891 were pulped and recycled to make paper during the shortages of World War I. Those for 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851 were, apart from a few which survived, destroyed in 1921 in the fire at the Public Record Office in Dublin at the beginning of the Irish Civil War. At present, just those for 1901 and 1911 have survived and are available. None was taken in 1921 because of the Civil War. {Question: What do "Letters of Reference to Map" indicate? Answer: Link to the Ask about Ireland answer: CWT's interpretation for Arraghan: The numbers and letters in this case mean little, except perhaps in the working copies of the maps used in the Valuation Office. This is because the built structures are not numbered in Arraghan, or any other townlands on the map, so we do not know whose house was whose. The 'a' indicates that Michael Divany was a farmer, as was almost every occupier in Arraghan. Laurence Finneran (a 'b'), however, was a cottager, working for Thomas Norton.}

{A note on Civil and Parish records: The General Register Office in Ireland started recording births, deaths and Catholic marriages in 1864 (it had started recording non-Catholic marriages in 1845). Since Michael Devany and Mary Noon married in 1865 these records cover their marriage and the births of all their children, as well as the deaths of those who died in Ireland. These are called Civil Records (as opposed to Church Records). Roman Catholic Church records of baptisms, marriage and burials were recorded by the local clergy. Not all have survived, or been made publicly available. Arraghan was in the R.C. Diocese of Elphin and Parish of Frenchpark (Belanagare and Kilcorkey), and only the parish records covering the period 7 Jan 1865 to 27 Feb 1881 (which incredibly just covers the baptisms of interest to us here), are available online, free of charge, from the National Library of Ireland.}

 "An estate having an estimated value of $80,000 is distributed by the will of Mrs. Sarah Sweet Joslin, of No. 51 Washington street, which was filed for probate in the office of the county surrogate on Wednesday. Mrs. Joslin, who was a resident of this town for many years, died on December 30. The will was dated January 17, 1916.  "To St. Vincent's Baby Hospital and Nursery on Elm street Mrs. Joslin bequeathed her home, it being stipulated in the will that the house shall be used for sheltering children who have grown too old to be cared for at the nursery. ... To the Sisters of Charity in charge of St. Vincent's Baby Hospital and Nursery she bequeathes her book and to the institution itself the sum of $5,000. ... {many more bequests to various charities, etc.}  "... 1917-01-6f:  Obit: Mrs. Sarah S. Joslin: Her husband was Dr. Benjamin Joslin. She came to Montclair 32 years ago (c. 1885).
 "Quiet and unassuming, shunning the public gaze, many only knew her as "that dear old lady who rides in a closed carriage with the sorrel horse"—"the dear old lady in black" whose widow's cap and veil wreathed a face ever serene and peaceful."
{The carriage coachman was, of course, Patrick DeVaney, probably from as early a 1906 to her death (11 years). "Sorrel" is is a sorrel-colored animal; especially: a light bright chestnut {bay, a brownish orange to light brown} horse often with a mane and tail of lighter color (such a flaxen) [Merriam-Webster].}
{Patrick DeVaney, as seen in the Montclair city directory entries listed below, remained at 51 Washington street up to 1924 (as a coachman up to 1920). It may be that the Sisters of Charity retained his service as a coachman and caretaker of the house.}

1920-12-05f:  Ship alien passengers list: Annie Devaney, 16, single, a domestic [servant], arrived at NYC on 5 Dec 1920 aboard the S.S. Celtic, which sailed from Liverpool on 24 Nov. She was from Cloonbard, Castlerea, a townland about 4 mile SW of Ballinagare. Her nearest relative there was her mother, Mrs. Devaney, of "Blackroon, Cllonard" {Brackloon, Cloonbard (neighboring townlands)}. Anne's destination was "Mount Clare" NJ. Her passage was paid by her father, Pat Devaney, 51 Washington St., Mont Clare {Montclair} NJ, whom she was joining in the U.S. Anne was of height 5'6", in good condition, fair complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, and born in Castlerea, Ireland. Three girls around Anne on the list were also from Brackloon/Cloonbard, and one girl four ahead was from Bellinagare. There were 69 aliens aboard the ship.

{Annie may have found that there was no place for her at 50 Washington st., Montclair, since it was not actually Patrick's house. He may have arranged for her to live with Thomas's family in Orange, two miles away, where she appears to have lived throughout the 1920's (see the Orange city directory entries, below) and into the 1930's, while working as a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital, in Orange.}

1923-04-03:  Ship alien passegers list: Mary Kate Devaney, 16, single, a domestic [servant], arrived at NYC on 3 Apr 1923 aboard the S.S. Cedric, which sailed from Liverpool on 24 Mar. She was from Ballinagar, (Union) Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, where her nearest relative was her mother, Mrs. Devaney, of the same place. She was joining her father, Patrick Devaney, 51 Washington St., Montclair, NJ, who had paid for her passage. She had never been in the U.S. before. Mary Kate was of height 5' 4", good health, not deformed, fair complexion, fair hair, blue eyes. Because of an address error ("Washinton St., Orange, NJ") she was detained for two hours while that was corrected.

Mrs. John Devaney, 83, In Glen Ridge 50 Years
 A High Requiem Mass for Mrs. Mary Higgins Devaney, 83, of 242 Baldwin St., Glen Ridge, widow of John J. Devaney, was held Saturday morning in Sacred Heart Church, Bloomfield. The funeral was from the Codey Funeral Home, and interment was in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Upper Montclair. Mrs. Devaney died last Thursday morning after a long illness. She had been in Mountainside Hospital for three months with a broken hip suffered in a fall at her home.
&bsp;Mrs. Devaney was the mother of Howard J. Devaney of Glen Ridge, executive director of the New Jersey Council of Christians and Jews and former president of the State Patrolmen's Benevolent Association. Born in Ireland, Mrs. Devaney came to the United States in 1905 and lived in Orange before going to Glen Ridge two years later. She was a member of the Rosary Society of Sacred Heart Church, Bloomfield.
 Her husband, a retired Montclair Board of Education employee, died in Jylu 1955. They celebrated the golden wedding anniversary in 1953.
 Besides her son, Mrs. Devaney is survived by three grandsons, Pfc. Howard Devaney Jr. stationed with the U.S. Army in Korea; Joseph W. of West Orange, and Dennis John Devaney, at home.
