Bülkau Lutheran parish records pertaining to
the family of August Wittkopf and his ancestors

Translated by Marion Wolfert, LDS Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, Nov. 2012

    Note: It was possible to find these records solely due to fact that Hannelore Wittkopf Bauer, of Germany, pointed us to them (see Hannelore’s charts in the John Parker Clark collection).  The LDS FamilySearch indexes do not yet cover these particular records.  Some of the records which Hannelore found in the archives in Germany could not be found on LDS FHL microfilm copy because some pages (spanning the years 1727 to 1745 and 1753 to 1758) were missing in the register which was photocopied.  Hannelore apparently had access to another copy of the earliest register, perhaps a Bishop’s transcript.  The records for which we were unable to obtain images of original register pages are grayed out, below.
    Records marked by an asterisk were translated and written out by Marion Wolfert.  Those not so marked were translated orally by Marion and recorded using a digital voice recorder, and soon thereafter transcribed by Conrad Terrill.
    All of these events, of course, occurred in Bülkau, since they were recorded in Bülkau parish registers with no indication otherwise.  Bülkau is a municipality is the district of Cuxhaven, in Lower Saxony, Germany, near the North Sea, to the west of Denmark.  Baumohr, now written as “Bovenmoor,” is a district of Bülkau.

On 26 Mar. 1818 were married the bachelor Friedrich Nicolaus Wittkopf, a former army cavalryman in the Bremen Light Calvalry (Hussar) Regiment, and son of the deceased Franz Heinrich Wittkopp, a former resident in Equord, County Peine, in the Hildesheim region, and the maiden Engel Adelheid Gronau, daughter of local cottager and butcher Johann Gronau.  (Original)

5. Marriage: Johann Simon Gronau & Catherina Elizabeth Schade, 21 Feb. 1792: *

Married on 21 Feb. 1792 were Johann Simon Gronau (in Dobrock, parish of Kadenberge), and Catharina Elisabeth Schaden, daughter of the cottager Johann Schaden on the Baumohr (a place within the parish Bülkau).  (Original)

6. Baptism: Engel Adelheid Gronau, 31 Oct. 1799: *

Christened and born on 31 Oct 1799 were a pair of twins.  The first born is a daughter named Engel Adelheit, the second born a son named Johann Peter.  The parents are Johann Gronau, cottager on the Baumohr, and wife Cathrine Elisabeth Schaden. Witnesses:

7. Burial: Johann Simon Gronau, 7 Sep. 1844:

Record no. 29, for 1844: On 7 Sep. was buried Johann Simon Gronau, who died 4 Sep. at age 78 years, 2 months, 13 days, widower of the deceased Margaretha nee Horesdorf.  {So Johann was born 5 Jul. 1766.}    (Original)

8. Burial: Catherina Elisabeth (Schade) Gronau, 8 Feb. 1825:

Record no. 3, for 1825: On 8 Feb. was buried Catharina Elisabeth Gronau nee Schade, wife of Johann Simon Gronau, butcher.  She had edema, and died 2 Feb., at age 66.  {So she was born ~1758/9.}    (Original)

9. Baptism: Catharina Elisabeth Schade, b. 15 Mar. 1759: *

Christened on the 16 March 1759 and born on the 15th on the Baumohr was Cathrine Elisabeth, daughter of Johann Schade and wife Anna Mangels. Witnesses:

10. Burial: Johann Schade, 25 Jan. 1799:

On 25 Jan. [1799] was buried, in quietness (without fanfare, perhaps because he died of a contagious disease), the widower Johann Schade, a cottager on Baumohr, who died on the 21st, at age 69.  He died of a chest illness (perhaps pneumonia or tuberculosis).  {So Johann was born ~1729/30.}  (Original)

11. Burial: Anna (Mangels) Schade, 9 Feb. 1789:

On 9 Feb. [1789] was buried, in quietness, Anna Schade, wife of Johann Schade, a cottager in Baumohr.  She died on 3 Feb., of typhoid, at age 52.  {So Anna was born ~1736/7.}  (Original)
